In a non-AC bus, I was the only passenger in the driver's cabin, along with the driver and conductor.
Yes, that would be stupid for many but I did not come across any sort of uncomfort. Further explanation, I was too unwell to stand among the sweaty crowd of the bus. And sitting between two people who were distant from me of which, one was busy driving, anyone but a stupid would prefer the crowd!
Two minutes passed on the traffic signal when I saw a hand cleaning the windshield. I peeped and saw a young malnourished boy. He knocked the windshield to steal the driver's attention. The driver called him by his window and mocked, "Why spoiling my bus, you?"
Both, driver and the conductor laughed.
I could see the boy pleading but couldn't understand what he said.
The driver ordered him to climb up and clean the upper half.
The heat was such that if you walked bare feet, you'd get blisters the very instant.
Besides this, the boy swiped the upper half of the windshield.
I now wish I had noticed his feet.
His clothes weren't much torn off.
His eyes, hungry.
For food? Care?
With the rug in his hand, he came back to the driver's window.
The driver took out a coin from his pocket and a local cigarette (beedi). He offered the boy, beedi, at first.
The boy denied and asked for a few bucks.
His eyes hopeful.
The driver handed him the coin.
The boy kept looking at him, his eyes still hopeful.
The driver and the conductor started laughing.
And the driver suddenly decided to follow the traffic rules.
The bus left him behind.
He left; with a coin that couldn't even afford a toffee, with his hunger.
You could measure his grief.
